5 Steps to Study & Pray God's Word

Studying God's word and praying can be hard, but answering these 5 simple questions can help us understand, apply, and pray through Scripture.

To get started, pick an easy-to-understand passage from the Bible, like Psalm 23, John 3:16-21, or Ephesians 2:1-10.

Next, answer these 5 questions:

1. What do these verses teach me about God?

2. How should I praise and thank God based on these verses?

3. What do these verses teach me about myself?

4. How should my life change because of these verses?

5. How do these verses show me Jesus?

Now let's use the Lord's Prayer as an example.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.

Amen.

Among many things, these verses:

1. teach us that God is our heavenly Father;

2. help us praise God for being the special and important ("hallowed") King of the universe, and we can thank Him for providing, forgiving, and protecting us.

3. teach us that we are totally dependent on God;

4. motivate us to forgive others as God has forgiven us; and

5. show us that Jesus, who taught this prayer to his disciples, is the only way we can come to God and call Him "Father" (John 14:6).

Now try answering these 5 questions with other Bible verses to help you study and pray God's Word!
